Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions (FAQ's) are answered below.

I’ve never heard of the Choice Advice Service - Who are you?

The Choice Advice Service is an independent service who provides impartial advice and support to help parents of children starting secondary school. As part of the Admissions Code, Local Authorities have to provide a Choice Adviser to help parents make an informed decision when applying for a high school.

Is the Choice Advice Service just for those parents whose children are starting high school?

Our core business is to support those parents who are applying and appealing for Year 7 places. However we will offer support to those who are applying for in year transfers or who are applying for a reception place, when the request is made.

Who else can I speak to about applying for schools?

For community schools you may wish to speak with the Admissions Team. For Faith schools, Academy’s, and Foundation Schools, who have their own admissions policy, you may wish to speak to the schools directly.

If you are looking for more independent advice you can speak to ACE (Advisory Centre for Education) who are a voluntary organisation who offer advice to parents on education issues.

Will an Independent Parental Adviser win my appeal?

No, the Independent Adviser is there to support you in putting your reason for wanting a place at the school across to the appeals panel. They cannot add any information that you haven’t told them. The decision is made by the independent appeals panel; they have nothing to do with the School, Education Leeds, or the Choice Advice Service.
